Loot & Scoot
During a weekend in December 2023 I participated in the UDU Game Jam together with 3 former classmates from University. We went into it without having planned what kind of games we wanted to make, only that we wanted to try and see if we could implement some form of ragdoll due to the specific limitations of having to make a game that would be a good fit for the UDU controller.
The theme for the jam ended up being Crazy Space. As a team we decided that we would take a more generic space and add in the crazy part to that. We ended up with what can be seen in the video.
Lessons learned
I went into this with game design as my main focus, but as is common in game jams, I had to branch out a bit. This led to me being in charge of not only keeping track of what we wanted in game and what we had time to still make, but also on top of that being the one who came up with the audio elements that were needed, as well as building the basics of the level the main character moves through. Due to the time limits of a game jam, this was mainly stuff from an assets pack I used to build 3 different modules for the level that could then be connected in both their regular and flipped orientation, allowing for one long level.
As for feedback from my fellow teammembers, I was told that what I did well was making a good effort with communication within the team and making sure everyone felt they had agency within their disciplines, this in part by making sure that I sought feedback on what was possible for them to do within the time they had to do it.
